Sugar...Proverbs 25:16 "Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it."



The average American--This includes every man, woman, and child--consumes 42 teaspoons of sugar each day. If the sugar were taken in a natural form, this would amount to over 90 feet of sugar cane to chew. Most people are unaware of he amounts of sugar found in ordinary pastries, desserts, drinks and snack foods.  


A high sugar intake is implicated in elevation of the serum lipoprotein, which is just as bad, if not worse, than a high cholesterol in the production of heart disease. Sugar consumption has also been associated with dental caries, gallbladder disease, diabetes, acne, and indigestion. In the book Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 321, the following statement appears: "The less of sweet foods --eaten, the better; these cause disturbances in the stomach, and produce impatience and irritability in those who accustom themselves to their use." 

Another important fact about sugar has to do with disease resistance. The white blood cells with segmented nuclei increase in numbers in the blood stream when the body has a bacterial infection. These cells destroy bacteria. They are the body's soldiers. However, when the blood sugar level goes up, these cells get sluggish and cannot destroy as many bacteria. 

God's way of eating is to use whole foods as grown.  It is difficult to overeat using these guidelines and overweight is almost non-existent.   Whole plant foods contain good fiber that makes one fell full before overeating.

Become a label reader whenever you shop for packaged foods.   Check to see if sugar and other sweeteners are high on the list.   But foods with no sugar or with low amount added.   Some manufacturers use several kinds of sugar in a product so as not to show sugar as the number one ingredient on the package label.

Sugar comes in a multiplicity of names on package labels.   All of the following terms are various names for sugars: raw sugar, brown sugar, dextrose, sucrose, glucose, fructose, corn syrup, corn sweeteners, honey, and molasses.   All need to be used sparingly.

Suggestions for Controlling Sugar Intake  (From Cooking By the Book)
1.  Do not put sugar on the table.   Try using raisins, dates, or some other fruit for a nutritious sweetener instead of sugar.
2.  Use dark brown sugar, molasses, honey and dried fruits with as little white or raw sugar as possible.   Be sparing with all concentrated sweets.
3.  When serving a dessert high in calories, plan for it in the meal by serving less calories in the main part of the meal.
4.  Build up a supply of recipes using little or no sugar.   In many desserts the quantity of sugar can be cut in half, and the dessert will be acceptable.
5.  But no sugar-coated breakfast food.
6.   Avoid desserts that use large quantities of milk, sugar and eggs together (like puddings).
7.   Learn to make desserts without the use of soda.
8.  Let desserts be a special treat-not served every day of the week!
9.  Use unsweetened fruit juices rather than heavily sugared ones.
10. Many fruit recipes do no need any sugar at all.  Use more fresh fruit and frozen fruit without added or large amount of sugar added.   If you buy canned fruit, purchase it with light syrup rather than heavy syrup.   Well prepared fruit dishes can take the place of the concentrated.
11. Take sweet foods chiefly at the end of a meal.
12. Do not eat candy or other sweets between meals.
13. Avoid large amounts of sugar and milk in combination.
14. If today's diet is to provide thiamine and niacin as the whole some diet of a former era did, we will have to give as hard a look at sugar as we did at roller-milled white flour.  We are eating huge amounts of sugar in candy, desserts, breakfast sweets and beverages that have no nutritional significance, only extra calories.
15. Keep the total amount of sugar in the diet low, and take only small amounts of concentrated sweets.

"Sugar and the Immune System"
"Researchers performed a series of studies that examined how sugar consumption weakens the ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria.  The studies showed that the capacity for white blood cells to destroy bacteria is weakened as sugar consumption rises.  Results of the white blood cell study are tabulated in Figure 10: Sugar Weakens White Blood Cells' Ability to Kill Bacteria.84
Note that if a person consumed no sugar for 12 hours, each white blood cell could destroy an average of fourteen bacteria.  If that same individual ate the equivalent of six teaspoons of sugar (such as found in a half-cup of pudding or a mere two ounces of candy), each white blood cell could only eliminate ten bacteria—a 25 percent decrease in killing power.  Progressive deterioration in the white cells’ bacteria fighting capacities beyond 25 percent occurred when 12 teaspoons and then 18 teaspoons were ingested.  When 24 teaspoons of sugar were consumed (the amount in a medium piece of cheesecake or a milk shake), the white blood cells were so compromised that they could only destroy an average of one bacterium each.  That represents a 92 percent reduction.  This effect is similar to what happens in a diabetic who has uncontrolled high blood sugars.  This provides one explanation why diabetics frequently get foot infections and other types of infections.  Keeping a healthy immune system is simply a personal choice that each one of us is free to make."

"The above study provides further insight into why the immune system is weakened when blood sugar levels rise in diabetics.  The researchers further demonstrated that sugar’s impairing effects on white blood cells are not short-lived.  The impairment lasted a full five hours in normal subjects.87  This means that during that five-hour period the white blood cells could not perform optimally.  When you consider how often throughout the day some people consume sugar, it becomes apparent that their white cells are not functioning very effectively for many hours of each day.  These researchers also discovered an interesting sidelight: a 36 hour fast seemed to significantly increase the ability of the white blood cells to kill off bacteria.  When you are sick and not hungry, it may thus be to your advantage to avoid eating, or at least to eat very sparingly for a day or two."

"One other sobering linkage involves sugar and cancer.  A number of different cancers have been statistically linked to sugar consumption in scientific studies.     Eight Cancers Linked to Sugar Consumption: Colon, Rectal, Breast, Ovarian, Uterine, Prostate, Kidney, Cancers of the nervous system."

"There are a number of theories why these linkages exist; however, a full explanation for them is not yet clear.  However, the data that is available provides an additional reason to think seriously about being aware of your intake of sugar, and making adjustments as indicated.
In light of all this research it is interesting to note the cautions of Ellen White.  Over a hundred years ago she wrote: “…sugar, when largely used, is more injurious than meat.”89 Predating White by many centuries, the Holy Scriptures also recorded reservations about simple sugars.  Although honey was mentioned, the principle seems to apply with equal force to any simple sugar:  “It is not good to eat much honey.”  Proverbs 25:27."

Hello, I am a humble, effervescent liquid.   Humble?  Well, that is debatable.  Actually, I am quite proud of myself.   Allow me to brag a little.

I fizz, sparkle, and bubble my way into thousands of people all over the world every day.  I HAVE MUCH POWER!  I stir men, women and teenagers to dash into their cars late at night to speed to their nearest 24-hour convenience store.  I motivate others to root through their purses or pockets for the last vestige of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters with which they will gladly part in exchange for me. 

The best thing about me is:  I AM ADDICTING.  I am responsible for giving thousand of addicts their daily "fixes."  This is because I sometimes contain a substance called "caffeine."  Caffeine is a stimulant.  It makes their hearts beat very fast and makes their nervous systems work like crazy.   They feel as though they could take n the world.  I tell you, I have OVERWHELMING PERSONAL MAGNETISM.

I' m a sneaky double-agent, too.  I pretend to give people all the good they need because caffeine give them a "lift."  However, a few hours afterward they come crashing "down" get shaky, and need me AGAIN…for another pseudo-charge.   This plays havoc with their hearts and nerves, but they still look to me for relief.  I feel very smug because I CALL THE SHOTS!

To give me an appetizing brown tint, I contain "caramel coloring," which has genetic effects and is cancer-causing suspect.  I sometimes have polyethylene glycol as one of my ingredients.  Glycol is used as anti-freeze in automobiles.

The bubbles and fizz with which I potently burn human insides is caused by my phosphoric acid and carbon dioxide.  The phosphorus in the acid upsets the body's calcium-phosphorus ratio and dissolves calcium out of the bones.   This can eventually result in OSTEOPOROSIS, A WEAKENING OF THE SKELETAL STRUCTURE, and WHICH CAN MAKE ONE SUSCEPTIBLE TO BROKEN BONES.   Also, the phosphorus fights with the hydrochloric acid in human stomachs and renders it ineffective.   This promotes indigestion, bloating and gassiness in many individuals.   Carbon dioxide is a waste product exhaled by humans, but they ingest it when they drink me.

Am I HUMBLE?  Well, look what I can do.

In this column the statement has often been made that sugar is a starvation food. Its physiological effect on the body has been demonstrated again and again. In this issue I propose to show how, in the technical manufacture of sugar, it becomes devitalized, demineralized, and robbed of any life-giving qualities it once possessed.


Commercial sugar, as you are aware, is made from cane sugar and sugar beets. At the present time beet sugar is very much more extensively used than cane sugar. Hence, the manufacture of beet sugar will be discussed. 


When the beets are received at the sugar factory, the tops and a small part of the neck of the beet are removed. The purpose is to free the beet from mineral matter it contains, as it interferes with the sugar crystallization. Therefore the first robbery of the precious salts is accomplished before the beet undergoes any chemical change.


The beets are then washed. The juice is extracted by what is known as the diffusion method. This consists of cutting the beets in very thin slices and running a stream of warm water through them. The sugar is dissolved and passes through with the water. When this juice emerges from the beet it is as black as ink. Now comes the first of the devitalizing processes.


Lime or carbon dioxide is added to it to precipitate some of the impurities found in this inky black beet sugar. The clear juice remains and is then centrifuged; that is, it is whirled around until it separates into two parts--molasses and raw beet sugar.


The raw beet sugar is then thoroughly heated destroying every particle of organized life-celled substance in it. But even now it must still be further chemically treated. It is still not sufficiently white and ghastly.


There are now added strong minerals such as acid calcium phosphate, phosphoric acid, and milk of lime.


Then, to carry away any suspended protein matter which may remain, the sugar manufacturer uses blood albumin from the slaughter.


Again, the manufacturer makes another purchase from the slaughter houses--bone-black from "canning" or low grade animals. This bone-black or animal charcoal is used as a filter to "purify" this mixture called sugar.


Thus far the sugar has been thoroughly heated twice. Now it must again be thoroughly boiled to separate it from the syrup. You may think that it ought to be ready for consumption now---but --not yet.


The last touch of shimmering whiteness must be added.


It is then bleached with a strong bleaching agent such as blue water. This process holds true with first-grade sugar but it becomes even worse with low-grade sugars. These inferior sugars are extracted from molasses by-products by the action of strong chemicals such as calcium and barium hydroxide. The molasses itself is used in gelatin and jams and in baking products.


Commercial sugar is representative of the ultimate extreme in food degeneration. Merely to state that it is a starvation food is putting it mildly. The term food is a misnomer. Sugar is the most injurious product in our nation’s diet with no exceptions and under every possible condition
