Grapefruit, oranges, lemons
Properties of Grapefruit, Although the grapefruit contains hundreds of non-nutritive components, as does the orange, the function of only a few is understood. Among these are pectin, flavonoids, carotenoids and limonoids. Grapefruit pulp does contains a moderate amount of carbohydrates and very few proteins and lipids. The most prominent is Vitamin C:
· Pectin is a type of soluble fiber found in many fruits such as citrus and apples. Grapefruit pectin is found in the fiber forming its pulp and in the whitish layer just below the skin and between the sections. This fiber stands out for its anti-cholesterol effects as demonstrated in numerus scientific experiments.
· Flavonoids are part of a group of non-nutritive components known as phytochemicals, which improves blood flow, and has an antioxidant and anticarcinogen properties.
· Carotenoids in pink grapefruit are a good source of Beta-carotene.
· Limonoids – Grapefruit is particularly rich in one of these, limonene, which gives the fruit its bitter taste, and a large portion of its proven anticarcinogenic properties.
Indications for use:
· Arteriosclerosis – The grapefruit serves to protect the arterial walls from the hardening and thickening associated with the deposit of cholesterol and its consequent calcification. The use of the whole grapefruit, including the pulp (not just the juice) is particularly useful for all forms of arteriosclerosis, including being complicated by blood clotting.
a) Cerebral (lack of circulation to the brain)
b) Coronary (Angina pectoris, heart attack)
c) Peripheral (lack of circulation to the limbs, specifically to the legs)
· Excess uric acid - in any of its forms: gout, uratic arthritis, kidney stones, etc. Although lemons are more effective in these cases, grapefruit treatment also gives good results and is a good alternative.
· Depurative treatments - whenever one wishes to “cleanse the blood” drink a glass of grapefruit juice on an empty stomach each morning for a month, resting one or two days a week.
· Infections – The grapefruit stimulates the immune system because of the Vitamin C.
· Obesity – The grapefruit does not promote weight loss in and of itself. However, because of its detoxifying properties, it is an excellent complement to the diet of anyone wishing to lose weight.
· Protection against cancer – The grapefruits specific combination of vitamin C, pectin and limonoids help protect against cancer by impeding the activity of many carcinogenic substances. (Source of above: Encyclopedia of Foods vol. 2)
